MARCEL HONES

Marcel Hones is a filmmaker and painter based in Minneapolis, MN. Hones’ films are grounded in recorded conversations between family, neighbors, and members of his close community. Visually, his films reference moments from his upbringing: ambiguous residential spaces, open cornfields, and a dreamscape of religious and folk iconography. Costuming and scoring are integral parts of Hones’ filmmaking process, providing continuity between the realism of spoken audio and the surrealist nature of recontextualized voices and spaces.

Hones’ makes large representational paintings on paper and plywood surfaces. His paintings utilize depictions of interpersonal relationships as an entry point to exploring doubt, dependence and faith. Hones’ painting process is significantly related to his filmmaking, often providing a preliminary step for conceptual development and a bridge between his interests in time based and static image making.
